In “The Jackrabbit,” our author J. J. Luke, describes a teenage boy whose life begins to take shape because of his neighbor’s influence, a Korean War veteran, exposing the boy to a worldview where making a “kill” shot is the right thing to do and deliberately missing it changes everything. One missed shot, and one deliberate refusal to kill, and the bond between boy and mentor snapped in the space between trigger and silence.
Later, as a young adult, J. J. describes the friendship the boy has with boyhood pals as they hunt jackrabbits in the warmth of the setting sun as the desert heat dissipates. Through quiet introspection and trepidation of an uncertain future, the author reveals how the boy finally comes to terms with himself and becomes the man he must be to survive.
From sweating in the scorching sun and walking the prickly cheatgrass of summer, to the frozen hush of a snow-covered desert, through boyhood and adolescence, he is made to deal with the cold harsh reality of the man he must become.
It’s a story of transformation—of boyhood, of conscience, and of the cold, harsh reality that shapes the soldier within.
